Hyatt Regency, Hua Hin, Thailand — Recommended

This hotel from the Hyatt chain is a great place for families with kids. It’s a medium size hotel of 213 rooms. The pools here are a highlight, providing lots of space for kids to play, and varied enough that they will satisfy everyone from toddlers to young teens.

The standard accommodation (King Room) is fairly straightforward, with a layout that will be familiar to travellers all over the world. Room sizes are adequate (at around 38sq m. for a standard rooms), but families should ask for ground floor rooms which offer slightly more space and make getting in and out easier.

Club Rooms are also available, although the major benefit of these is that there are drinks and snacks, as well as a private pool. I’m not sure if these are really the best choice for families. On the one hand, families do go there, and like the fact that the kids can snack all day without having to spend more money on food and drinks. On the other, the kids can create a lot of noise and dominate the snack area, and this seems to cause some noticeable resentment for guests without kids (which is not the case in the normal sections of the resort)
The beach is excellent, a long strip and quite quiet — this is due to the fact that it is a little way out of town. Guests would need to use the hotel transport shuttle, a taxi, or a hire car to get into the town, or visit the Fisherman’s Village shopping mall.

Closest to the beach is a shallow pool, with clean sand, that slopes gently for toddlers. Behind that, and connected by a system of canals and bridges, are other pools, with the highlight being a large slide, which is accessed by climbing a tower. This slide is really very fast, and there is an age restriction (partially enforced) of 7 years old. One of my kids was younger than that, went down the slide once on my lap, and then went on himself for the rest of the stay.

The canals connecting the various pools are good fun for exploring, and the lush nature of the gardens surrounding the pools means there is lots of shade — the water gets much cooler round here, and can be a great refuge in the afternoon when the temperature climbs.

Service is what you would expect from a Hyatt Regency, efficient and friendly. The breakfast buffet was good, with a wide choice of food on offer, and relaxed surroundings.

The Barai spa is excellent, as is the McFarland House food outlet — although these places are definitely for parents’ rest and relaxation, rather than the kids!

Pros:

  • great pools
  • great slide
  • friendly service
  • lovely green gardens
  • long, clean, empty beach

Cons:

  • so-so rooms
  • not within walking distance of the town

A solid recommendation for families with kids from 2-13 years.
