Centara Grand Mirage Beach Resort, Pattaya, Thailand – Recommended

This hotel is a great place for adventurous kids, particularly pre-teens. The hotel itself is huge, and this means that there is plenty of space, and more importantly, lots of pools.

The downside of this is that check-in and check-out can be a long process, in a very hot lobby. Saying that, even when the hotel is full (for example, every weekend, when Bangkok empties and families go to the sea), it doesn’t seem too crowded, even at breakfast, due to the range of outlets that are used.

The pools are a highlight. There are 2 fast slides, several slow slides (suitable for small kids), a lazy river, as well as the main pool, a lap pool, and a ‘no kids’ pool, so lots of choice.

Poolside service is great, with an electronic callout device, that brings an attendant to your lounger.

Rooms are on the generous side, with the Deluxe Family Residence giving the kids a separate bedroom (bunks plus a pull-out bed, so it sleeps 3), as well as the master bedroom, and a large living room. There is one large shared bathroom, with separate shower and bathtub.

Service at the hotel is very friendly and personal, which is a pleasant surprise given the size of the place — 555 rooms, and some public spaces such as the lobby can be very impersonal.

The hotel is far enough located from the fleshpots of Pattaya that you aren’t even aware of that side of life.

Pros:

  • great pools
  • great family rooms
  • great service
  • far from the seedy side of Pattaya

Cons:

  • slow check-in and check-out can fray nerves as the kids sit in the stuffy lobby

All in all, a solid recommendation for families with kids from 2-14 years.
